New and Improved MARIAH

CDE has replaced its UNIX machine, MARIAH, with an AlphaServer DS10 (the same model as NORMAN). The new MARIAH is a 466 mhz Alpha processor with 640 Mb of ram. It's running version 5.0 of Tru64 Unix, which is a new version. If you have any problems with MARIAH, please report them to Consultant.

More Problems with STAT/TRANSFER

We have uncovered yet another problem with STAT/TRANSFER. This bug was introduced three weeks ago when STAT/TRANSFER was updated so that it could read SAS version 8 data sets. It is truncating variable names longer than seven characters. This affects all statistical data sets. We just received a fix from the software developer this afternoon which should be installed on WinCenter and the three Intel PCs in the 7413 Terminal Room later today.

SAS Update Fixes TTEST Bug and includes Two New Procedures

The latest maintenance release of SAS version 8 was installed on UNIX last week. This release, 8.1, fixes the bug in the TTEST procedure reported last month.

Version 8.1 also contains two new experimental procedures. The MI Procedure is for multiple imputation of missing data. Click for documentation. The MIANALYZE procedure is for combining the results of the analyses of imputations and generating valid statistical inferences. Click for documentation.

Visit SAS's web site for new features in version 8.

EUDORA Upgrade Available

The Eudora 5.0 upgrade is now available, without the ads that some of you saw when you did the earlier upgrade. This version has a few new features, and appears to be as stable as the previous version. One of the new features is Moodwatch, which warns you if there are potentially offensive words in your message. This feature can easily be disabled. Another new feature provides a slightly easier way to select a mailbox with new mail using the Mailbox menu. You can also get daily usage statistics. For a full description of the new features, visit Eudora's web site . If you would like this upgrade, please contact the consultant.

Creating Adobe Acrobat Files

Need to create pdf files but don't have the software? SSCC now has Adobe Acrobat installed on the three Intel PCs in the 7413 Terminal Room, the PC in the I/O Room, and the PC in the printer area of the 2470 Terminal room.

Dell Recalling Batteries on some Notebook PCs

Dell is recalling batteries sold with the following Dell notebook computers: Latitude CPiA, CPiR, CPtC, CPtS, CPtV, CPxH and CPxJ, and Inspiron 3700 and 3800. These batteries can short circuit, even when the battery is not in use, causing them to become very hot, release smoke and possibly catch fire. To contact Dell, call (877)741-6420 or visit http://support.dell.com/battery.
