===================== SSCC News, June, 1996 ===================== This is the SSCC News. This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSCC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSCC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. Inside this issue... To preregister for a class, send mail to SSCCLASS indicating which class(es) you plan to attend. You will be reminded about your pre- registration through e-mail a day or two before the class begins. ---------------------------------------------------- Update on Air Conditioning Problems in Computer Room ---------------------------------------------------- On Saturday morning, May 18, the air conditioner in the computer room failed again. The computers and other devices quickly heated up the room. Had temperatures gone much higher, we risked equipment damage or (gulp!) data loss. SSCC staff had to power off all computers, printers, and other devices for the weekend. The machines were brought back up for Monday during business hours and fans were used to cool the computer room, but the temperatures crept back up and at the end of the day everything needed to be turned off again. Physical plant came in Monday evening, May 20, and repaired the air conditioning unit. At this time, Physical Plant has completed a quote for replacing this old, unreliable unit with a new air conditioner. However, the decision to do the job themselves or to take bids from a firm outside the university has not yet been made. It looks like we will be stuck with trying to keep the old unit running through the summer at least. If it fails again, more emergency down time may be necessary. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update on ULTRIX's Retirement -- DECNET Mail Addresses and the New Mail Hub --------------------------------------------------------------------------- (In April's SSCNEWS, we announced that all Ultrix computers (EUNICE, CDE2, HARMON, and IRP01D) will be phased out early in the fall of 1996. This article is another in a series explaining the implications of the demise of Ultrix.) Beginning October 1, 1996, DECnet email addresses (addresses containing the "::" syntax) will no longer be supported by SSCC systems. All email messages outside the cooperative must use internet addressing. The standard internet address format uses the familiar username@host.name syntax. This may affect everybody, whether you read mail on Unix or on VMS. I. Addressing electronic mail When sending email, you must use the internet email address for correspondents outside the SSCC. This is not a change from previous practice, but it is worth repeating. Internet addresses look like "username@ssc.wisc.edu": they consist of a username, an @ sign, and a hierarchy of machine and "domain" names separated by dots. Inside the SSCC a simple username is always an adequate email address. On UNIX and on VMS using the EMAIL command (PMDF mailer command) you can use a simple internet address. For example, huey@us-senate.gov On VMS using the MAIL command (the standard VMS mail command, which use the SSCC discourages) you must use a more awkward syntax: IN%"huey@us-senate.gov" Remember to include the quotes around the internet address. II. Mail distribution lists DECnet addresses in mail distribution lists must be changed to internet addresses. Any addresses looking like: host::username must be changed to: username@host The following command will identify all lines that need to be edited in any of a user's .DIS files on VMS: search [...]*.dis "::" On Unix, your alias file depends on the mailer you use. Contact consultant if you need assistance in locating your alias file. The command you use to search the file for "::" addresses is: grep '::' aliasfile replacing "aliasfile" with the name of your alias file. III. Setting your email forwarding: VMS to Unix If you read your email on Unix or on a PC using POP, confirm that the forward from VMS to Unix is in the internet format. Log onto VMS, execute the EMAIL command, and type: show forward The address to which your mail is forwarded will be displayed. It should read: Your mail is being forwarded to IN%"dewey@unix-mailhost.ssc.wisc.edu" If, instead, it reports that your mail is forwarded to an address like "eunice::username", then you must reset the forward by typing: set forward dewey@unix-mailhost IV. Setting your email forwarding: Unix to VMS If you read your email on VMS, confirm that the forward from VMS to unix is in the internet format. Log onto Unix and execute the following command: cat .forward The address to which your mail is forwarded will be displayed. It should be in internet format, such as: username@robin If it is in DECnet format, such as "robin::username", edit the .forward file changing the address to the internet format. ----------------------------- New and Updated SSCC Handouts ----------------------------- The following new publications are available for SSCC users: Using PMDF Mail on VMS (SSCC Pub 1-2) Using MajorDomo for Mailing Lists (SSCC Pub 1-8) Using SAS to Perform a Table Lookup (SSCC Pub 4-1) Constructing Indicator Variables with SAS (SSCC Pub 4-2) SAS Programming Efficiencies (SSCC Pub 4-3) Accessing Disk Shares from the LAN with Windows for Workgroups (SSCC Pub 5-7) Accessing Disk Shares from the LAN with Windows 95 (SSCC Pub 5-8) How to Decode and Encode Mail Messages (How-to #2) The following SSCC publications have undergone major revisions: How to Transport SAS Data Sets between Digital UNIX, SunOS, and Ultrix (#1) How to Transport SPSS System Files between Digital UNIX, SunOS,& Ultrix (#12) How to Transport SAS Data Sets from VMS to UNIX (#17) How to Read Compressed SAS Transport Files Directly in Your SAS Program (#28) SSCC publications are available in the racks in the public terminal room, Soc.
