Welcome Mark Banghart to SSCC's Statistical Support Team

Please welcome Mark Banghart to SSCC's statistical computing support team. Mark earned his M.A. degree in Statistics from UW-Madison in May. He also has an M.A. in Education and a B.S. in Computer Science. Prior to coming to UW-Madison, Mark was a high school math teacher. Mark is already working on SSCC's help desk and is eager to consult with members on their statistical computing projects. Mark is an expert R programmer, and is rapidly learning Stata. Note though that he'll be out June 13-23.

SSCC Summer Training

This month we are offering Stata training. Visit our training page for details and to register.

Stata and R "boot camps" will be held at the end of August, so even if you're leaving Madison for the summer you may be able to fit in the training you'll need for the coming year before classes start. If you work with incoming students, students just starting to do research, or others who would benefit from SSCC training, we and they would appreciate you letting them know what's available.

Need to learn a statistical package but missed the class? The SSCC Knowledge Base is always available, and includes Stata for Researchers, Stata for Students, SPSS for Students, Multiple Imputation in Stata, and much more. QSR also has a set of online NVivo tutorials.

My WebSpace to be Discountinued June 30

MyWebSpace, the UW file storage system, will retire June 30, 2014, and will be replaced by Box.com. Read DoIT's announcement to learn about the benefits of using Box, how to migrate your files to Box, and where to get help if needed. 

Tip: Creating PDF Files on Winstat

Despite multiple notices in SSCC News, some people were caught off guard by the removal of all Adobe products from Winstat, including Acrobat and Dreamweaver. Keep in mind that the new campus Adobe license allows you to install these programs on any University-owned computer. If you use a Windows PC that logs in to the SSCC's PRIMO domain, you can do so very easily using Software Center.

You still have a couple of options for creating PDF files on Winstat. Microsoft Office programs can create PDF files directly: simply choose File, Save As, and set Save as type to PDF. We've also installed a program called PDFCreator which creates a virtual printer (also called PDFCreator). Print as usual but to the PDFCreator printer, and PDFCreator will create a PDF version of your document.
