------------------------
Increased Operator Hours
------------------------
We will be increasing operator hours by 18 hours per week beginning
April 14. The new hours will be Monday - Friday 8-6 (they were 9-5
before) and weekends 12-4 (there were no weekend hours before).

You may recall that operator hours were reduced last September because
of a decrease in tape mount requests and the increased availability of
self-serve printers. We have found that users still rely heavily on
the printers in the computer room and that leaving them unattended for
long periods of time was both inconvenient to users and not good for
the printers (lots of jams).

Also, having an operator on duty on weekends will supplement our voice
mail box for reporting system and network failures during weekends and
evening hours. If you discover a system or network problem between
12 and 4 on a weekend day, be sure and report the problem to the
operator (263-4814), not the emergency voice mail box.

UNIX Software Availability Changes Effective June 1997
------------------------------------------------------
We recently did an audit of UNIX software licenses and discovered
we are running software on some computer systems for which we are
not licensed. In order to align our computer systems to our licenses,
we need to make the following changes which will go into effect June 1:

                Computers Software Software Availability
Software to be Removed from: after June 1
-------- ------------------- ---------------------
GLIM 4.0 GUY,WINGRA,ELAINE NORMAN
LISREL 8.0 GUY,WINGRA,ELAINE NORMAN
PRELIS 2.0 GUY,WINGRA,ELAINE NORMAN
SAS 6.12* WALT,DODD CDE2S,BOVINE,CHANCE,WILPOP
SPLUS 3.3 WALT,BOVINE,CHANCE, CDE2S,DODD
                WILPOP
SPSS 4.0 WALT CDE2S,BOVINE,CHANCE,DODD,WILPOP
SPSS 6.1 GUY,WINGRA,ELAINE NORMAN
STATA 5.0 GUY NORMAN,WINGRA,ELAINE

Type "soft" followed by either the name of a software package or the
name of a computer, to see a list of software availability by computer.

*Note that SAS 6.11 is available on GUY, NORMAN, ELAINE, and WINGRA.

--------------------------
LIMDEP 6.0 Removed on UNIX
--------------------------
Now that we have had LIMDEP 7.0 up and running satisfactorily on all
UNIX systems for several months, we have removed LIMDEP 6.0. When you
type LIMDEP on UNIX, you will now get version 7.0 instead of version 6.0.

------------------------------------------
WordPerfect 7.0 Now Available on WinCenter
------------------------------------------
Corel WordPerfect 7.0 has been installed on WinCenter. Because this is a
32-bit application, we're hoping this will solve the majority of problems
reported by various users who were trying to run WordPerfect 6.1 on
WinCenter. The 6.1 printing bug has been resolved in 7.0.

--------------------------------------------------------
Cleaning Schedule Changes for VMS TEMPDISK and WORKDISKs
--------------------------------------------------------
At the suggestion of users, we have changed the cleaning schedules for
TEMPDISK and WORKDISKs on VMS. TEMPDISK is now being cleaned off
nightly at midnight. (It was cleaned off every 12 hours at 2:00
before.) WORKDISKs AGEDISK2, CDEDISK3, and SOCDISK3 are now being
cleaned off every Monday at 12:01 a.m. (They were cleaned Sunday at
12:01 a.m. before.) Please note that older files on these disks may
be deleted if a disk fills up before the disk is scheduled for cleaning.

-------------------------------------------
Improvements made to Tape Backups on Harmon
-------------------------------------------
SSCC staff have greatly improved the speed of 4mm tape backups on the I/O
room PC (Harmon). Backup operations had been taking a lot of time to
complete and often hanging in the middle of a job. Harmon is configured
to back up files in "tar" (Tape ARchive) format from either UNIX or VMS.
stand a good chance of being read at other institutions. This is a
sufficiently standard format that tapes created here will stand a good
chance of being read at other institutions.

Sociology 365 on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Anyone is welcome to come
but preregistration is still required so that we have enough handouts.

Looking for a Good Text Editor for your PC?
-------------------------------------------
If so, you might want to try TextPad. TextPad has lots of features and
configuration options, e.g, multiple instances, split windows, case
conversion, and the ability to handle both the Unix and DOS file formats.
TextPad is shareware software downloadable from http://www.textpad.com
