Annual Seminar Workshop at Upham Woods
At the end of semesters in which I teach graduate seminars, I organize a weekend workshop retreat at a University of Wisconsin facility north of Madison on the Wisconsin River called Upham Woods. At this workshop students present their research and term projects from the seminar, we discuss general themes from the semester, and celebrate the end of the semester. In addition to serious academic presentations and discussions, the weekend involves outdoor recreation -- tobogganing in the winter and canoeing in the summer -- dancing and singing, and carousing at a country pub nearby.
